Question 1

How do you repair a hole in drywall so it's invisible?

Accepted Answer

The key is proper backing, multiple coats of joint compound, and feathering. For small holes (under 6 inches) we use a California patch or mesh patch backed with joint compound. For larger holes we cut back to the nearest studs, install new drywall, tape all seams, and apply three coats of mud — each coat feathered wider than the last. After sanding, we apply the matching texture and the repair disappears. Rushing any of those steps is what causes visible repairs.

Question 2

Can you match my existing wall texture?

Accepted Answer

Yes — texture matching is one of our specialties. We replicate knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, Santa Barbara, and custom hand-applied textures. Before we start, we test the texture on a scrap piece of drywall and compare it to your wall in the same lighting. We adjust the spray pressure, dilution, and technique until the match is right, then apply it to the repair area. In most cases the repair is undetectable once painted.

Question 3

My drywall was damaged by water. What needs to happen before you repair it?

Accepted Answer

The moisture source must be fixed before any drywall work begins — otherwise the new drywall will be damaged again. We verify the area is dry (we use a moisture meter) before closing the wall. We remove all compromised drywall, including any that shows soft spots or discoloration. For bathrooms and kitchens we install moisture-resistant (green board or cement board) drywall. Once the repair is complete and painted, there's no trace of the damage.

Question 4

I have cracks in my walls that keep coming back. Can you fix them permanently?

Accepted Answer

Recurring cracks are usually caused by foundation settling or seasonal movement. A simple skim-coat over the crack will crack again. Our approach is to open the crack slightly, apply fiberglass mesh tape (which bridges the movement), and build up with multiple coats of joint compound. For corner cracks we replace the corner bead entirely. This reinforced repair handles normal settling without re-cracking. If the cracking is severe or structural, we recommend a structural inspection before drywall work.

Question 5

What is a Level 5 finish and do I need it?

Accepted Answer

Level 5 is the highest drywall finish standard defined by the Gypsum Association. It involves applying a full skim coat over the entire surface — not just the seams and fasteners — creating a perfectly flat, glass-smooth wall. You need Level 5 if you're using high-sheen paint (semi-gloss or gloss), installing wallcoverings, or if the room has raking light (light that hits the wall at a low angle, like from a window or sconce). Under raking light, even small imperfections in a Level 4 finish become visible. For most standard rooms with flat or eggshell paint, Level 4 is sufficient.

Question 6

What's the difference between Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5?

Accepted Answer

Level 3 is used for garages, utility rooms, and areas that will receive heavy texture — all seams and fasteners are covered but tool marks are acceptable. Level 4 is the standard residential finish — all seams, fasteners, and beads are smooth and flat, ready for flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the entire surface for a perfectly uniform finish required under gloss paints, wallcoverings, or raking light. We offer all three levels and will recommend the right one based on your paint choice and lighting.

Question 7

How long does drywall finishing take to dry between coats?

Accepted Answer

Joint compound needs to dry completely between coats — typically 24 hours per coat under normal conditions (65–75°F, moderate humidity). In the Bay Area's cooler, more humid winters, drying can take 36–48 hours per coat. We apply three coats minimum for seams and repairs, so a standard finishing job takes 3–5 days of drying time before sanding and texture. Rushing the drying process causes shrinkage cracks and bubbling. We never use heat guns to force-dry compound — it causes surface drying while the interior stays wet.

Question 8

How do you remove a popcorn ceiling?

Accepted Answer

We wet the texture with water (which softens the compound), then scrape it off with wide drywall knives. Once the texture is removed, the ceiling usually needs skim-coating to fill the small divots and imperfections left behind. After sanding, the ceiling is smooth and ready for paint. The process is messy — we protect all furniture, flooring, and fixtures with plastic sheeting before we start. Most rooms take one to two days depending on size.

Question 9

Does my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?

Accepted Answer

Acoustic (popcorn) texture applied before 1980 may contain asbestos. We strongly recommend testing before any removal work begins. You can purchase an asbestos test kit at a hardware store or hire a certified inspector. If asbestos is present, it must be removed by a licensed abatement contractor before we can do drywall work. If your home was built after 1980, asbestos in the texture is very unlikely but testing is still the safest approach.

Question 10

How much does drywall repair cost?

Accepted Answer

Small repairs (nail pops, doorknob holes, single patches under 6 inches) typically run $150–$350 depending on texture complexity. Medium repairs (multiple patches, water damage sections, 1–4 square feet) run $300–$700. Large repairs or full wall sections are priced by the square foot and scope. Level 5 skim-coat finishing for a room is priced by the square footage of wall and ceiling surface. We provide free written estimates — text us photos of your project and we can usually give you a ballpark same day.

Question 11

How long will my drywall repair or finishing project take?

Accepted Answer

A single small repair (one or two patches) can be completed in a half-day visit, but the compound needs 24 hours to dry before texture and paint. A full room of repairs or finishing typically takes 3–5 days including drying time between coats. Larger projects — full room skim coats, popcorn ceiling removal, or new construction finishing — are scoped individually. We give you a realistic timeline upfront and stick to it. We don't rush drying time to finish faster.

Question 12

Do you provide free estimates?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Call or text (925) 914-1577 for a free estimate. For most repairs, texting photos of the damage is enough for a same-day ballpark quote. For larger projects — full room finishing, new construction, or extensive water damage — we schedule a brief on-site visit to measure and assess before providing a written estimate. There's no charge for the estimate and no obligation.

Question 13

What cities do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve the entire East Bay and Tri-Valley area including Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, Alamo, Danville, San Ramon, Martinez, Clayton, Antioch, Pittsburg, Oakley, Pleasanton, Oakland, and Berkeley. If you're in Contra Costa or Alameda County and don't see your city listed, call us — we likely serve your area.

Question 14

Are you licensed and insured?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Concord Drywall Repair & Finishing holds California Contractor's State License Board license #939210. We carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation. Question 15

Do you use subcontractors?

Accepted Answer

No. Monserrate Perez personally performs or directly supervises every job. We don't hand your project off to a crew you've never met. When you hire Concord Drywall Repair & Finishing, you get the owner on site. That's how we maintain consistent quality across every job — from a single patch repair in Walnut Creek to a full Level 5 finish in Alamo.
